I submitted my I485 more than 1 year ago, still waiting. Want to start my own business, can I quit my job and start working on that (get things set-up, try to get funding etc.)?

If you’re working, you must be here on a working visa of some sort. To obtain that visa, however, you must have a sponsorship from an American-based company.
If you go into business for yourself, you change your status and (probably) void the working visa conditions. If this were to occur, you’re most likely to get your I-485 petition thrown out (regardless of where it is in the approval process). You’re also likely to be asked to leave the country … you no longer have a valid visa, and are therefore an ‘illegal alien’.
You could try to do all the preliminary leg-work (set up funding, etc) for your prospective business while still working at your existing job … but the bank, etc may ask for papers proving you are eligible for the money (i.e. a citizen) – without them, you’d be out of luck.

Hello all I don’t work at UPS and I’ve applied for a job at the rival company fedex and they say I can’t be working for any of their competiors so I wanted to know since I quit UPS a week before applying for fedex and filling out an application it should show up on my nackground check I phoned UPS they say they wouldn’t know but they sent m my last paycheck already and so.. can someone help me
They are referring to concurrently holding two jobs. Applying for another job is not considered ‘working’ until you accept the offer. It sounds like you have already terminated your employment with UPS.
Transferring between companies happens very frequently, when people believe that it will be greener on the other side. Were you terminated or are you looking for a better company?
Background checks are for criminal things (like employee theft, etc). Regardless, you should be upfront about your work history. I would include the previous job on your resume because it shows that you have experience.

My employer wants me to sign the policy that you cant work for any ohter same field employer within 10 mile area of that work place after you resign or quit. should i sign this? i never heard of this kind of policy.. help me
There is a large body of laws in every state about non-compete agreements. It is common for an employer to require that employees sign such an agreement.
The big question is what happens if you do not sign it. In most cases the employer can terminate the employee for not signing it. Why? Unless you are working under a union or written employment contract you are an at will employee. At will employees can be fired for any or no reason at all, with or without notice. Not signing such an agreement can be considered as ‘insubordination’ because you did not follow a directive of your employer. Not only can you be terminated but your employer can use that insubordination to fight you getting unemployment benefits.
All states recognize a non-compete agreement as a legal method for an employer to protect their business. Each state has law about the length of time the agreement is in force and the physical area effected. Before you decide to fight your employer on this learn your state law on non-competes. Remember in this recession jobs are hard to get.

I just quit my job as accountant paying 53K a year plus overtime and benefits because it was causing me way too much stress. I live in boston but came back home to Connecticut for the weekend to think over everything that just happened. should i wait to start looking for a new job or take some time to think?
Start looking immediately. It is extremely difficult to get a job in this present economy.
If you have to relax, do so during the weekends – but use the weekdays to search.
