To obtain that visa, however, you must have a sponsorship from an American-based company. If you go into business for yourself, you change your status and (probably) void the working visa conditions. If this were to occur, you're most likely to get your I-485 petition thrown out (regardless of where it is in the approval process). You're also likely to be asked to leave the country ... you no longer have a valid visa, and are therefore an 'illegal alien'.
