I want to quit the job I started one week ago for a better job?
Published by admin on February 5, 2010I took an interview for a job that I really wanted 3 weeks ago, but I didn’t hear anything from them so I started in a new job. After one week of working with the new company, the other one call me saying that they wanted me to work with them immediately. I want to quit the job I’m working right now but I don’t know how or what to say. I feel really bad because I can’t give them the 2 weeks notice and they treated me so well but the other job pays a lot more and I really wanted the other one. What should I say to my supervisor. I need to tell him tomorrow!
I was planning to tell him, that I can work on weekend or after 5:00pm (when I get out of the other job) to help them until they find someone else. What do you think?
Wow, this is rough. There is probably not going to be a way you can tell them without them getting upset. It couldn’t hurt offering to work weekends for a week or two until they find someone else, but be careful that they don’t take advantage of you in this situation. I would recommend being honest and direct, apologize for the inconvenience that this situation has caused, but do not apologize over and over because that would not solve anything.
If you offer to work evenings or weekends, let them know it would be for a set time limit (i.e. two weeks since that’s how much time you would give notice).
Good luck!

You have to do what is better for you.

Poor, poor planning. Ethically you should stay with the job you took, that was your choice to take the job in hand or wait for the better opportunity. You should stay at least six months.

Has the company that offered you the job, already agreed on a strating date, and have done the drug and background check? If so, then I would explain to the current supervisor that you had been waiting for this job, and they have contacted you and asked for you to join their team. If the supervisor is understanding, then he may agree to you working for him also after you get off from the other job.
Don’t burn any bridges with previous employers, cause they may come in handy down the road.

Don’t feel bad. Be up front and honest that the job you were waiting for and applied to a little while is too good to pass up. You could still put in 2 weeks notice with this job and tell the new job you can start in 2 weeks.

Just explain to him that the other job is a better paying opportunity. I would say sorry for such a short notice but I must do whats best for me. I think he/she would understand. Good Luck with your new job!!
